Hi Bob,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Let me answer you query to password protect a particular folder/file.

Please be informed that you cannot password protect a particular folder/file in windows 10, you may please use your favorite search engine to search for a third part software which can perform the task.

THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE DISCLAIMER:

Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk.

However Encrypting File System (EFS) is a feature of Windows that you can use to store information on your hard disk in an encrypted format. Encryption is the strongest protection that Windows provides to help you keep your information secure.

How to encrypt a file

  1. Right-click (or tap and hold) a file or folder and select Properties.
  2. Select the Advanced... button and select the Encrypt contents to secure data check box.
  3. Select OK to close the Advanced Attributes window, select Apply, and then select OK.

Reference: If you are using the Pro or Enterprise edition, you may use bit locker to encrypt the device.

BitLocker helps protect all of the personal and system files on your PC if it's stolen, or if unauthorized users try to use the PC. Use BitLocker to encrypt all files on fixed data drives (like internal hard drives) and use BitLocker To Go to encrypt files on removable data drives (like external hard drives or USB flash drives).

Thank you.

I am with yo, I think it is ridiculous that you can't use the encrypt option without downloading dangerous third party software? What is the use of creating an option and than grey it out!  Very disappointed

Paul_G_FZ. That is what this question is about. How do you protect your files on the hard drive, if you can not protect is with a password.

Well this IS ridiculous. In this day and age with cybersecurity a priority at all times. So how secure are folders I store in One Drive? Ridiculous. I think MS should fire whomever designed this software.

I followed the directions above to encrypt a folder.  While I see where I need to check the encryption, it is unavailable to check.  I can only compress.  Is there a way to make it available?  And why wouldn't it be available?

I have the exact same problem.  I follow the Microsoft encryption directions precisely, and the encryption box is greyed out.  When I try to click on it, nothing happens.  The encryption is unavailable, so the Microsoft directions do not work at all!  Why are these directions given when they do not work?

this is useless.  why take folder/file protection off windows 10.   suggest it be written back into the next auto update along with old media player facility.
